CANADIAN COMEDY

Thank the Lord for the CRTC. They force Canadian content, and the result is some really great shows. Too bad they force TSN to edit Raw. You can contact me by email at jbekolay@home.com or ICQ me, my UIN is 2572608.

Message Board

I have a Comedy Network message board up at http://pub21.ezboard.com/bcomedynetwork. Please take time out and post a message, hopefully I can build a little community here. The goal of this board is to be an alternative to the

Shows

Butch Patterson: Private Dick
I watched most of the first season of this show, and it was a little boring (although I did like the Pierre Mustard episode). I didn't bother with the second season. I started again with the third season and I'm hooked. So many hilarious lines like "When it comes to me and porno, I only got two words: always put down a tarp." Greg Lawrence rules.

Kevin Spencer
Another Greg Lawrence show, but animated. Started out as a short that parodied campy sitcoms, except it was just a series of drawings with Lawrence on the voice over and a laugh track. It was pretty funny. When it became a show, simple animation was added. The first season focused on Kevin in jail, while it has moved away from that. The new season is awesome, I love this show.

Tom Green
Sometimes this show is really funny, sometimes it's uncomfortable to watch. I started watching this show as soon as it went national, so I've seen Tom's career explode. I'll admit I never thought I'd see him hosting SNL or boning Drew Barrymore. Anyway, the two seasons on the Comedy Network were the best, and the MTV shows were a bit weaker, but still pretty good.

Buzz
Daryn and Mo totally rule. Daryn is a bit of smartass sometimes, but it makes for good TV. Be sure to download the clip above, it's hilarious!

Great Scott
Sort of a take off on the "guy on the street" premise of Tom Green. Greg Scott was not obnoxious like Tom Green, but he still found ways to make people uncomfortable. Pretty good show.

Skullduggery
This show never really did it for me. It was about criminal twins who had to do a series of tasks to save the girl they were fighting over.

Y B Normal?
The first season of this show was nothing special, but they gave the show a unique format in the second season. It really worked well. All around good sketch show.

Gutterball Alley
Man, what low production values here. Still, I found it funny. People talk, then bowl for money and prizes. Also included were bowling related sketches and "Celebrity Pin-Up", where a contestant would try to hit a pin with a picture of a celebrity on it.

Supertown Challenge
This show never really caught on with me. The concept is that Canadian towns fight to see who is the Supertown. At first it was hosted by Colin Mochrie, then he was replaced in the second season (by Jason Jones?).

The Itch
There've only been a few shows, but I've liked what I've seen. It's a parody of those entertainment news shows. Jeremy Pilchet rules!! And Jessica Holmes is purty...

Chez Carla
Then again, Carla Collins isn't too bad herself. The Queen of Canadian Entertainment hosts this very retro show. I got a kick out of it.

Aaagh! It's the Mr. Hell Show
Funny cartoon. The animation is interesting. There was one awesome line from Mr. Hell: "Democracy: still the best government money can buy."

Puppets Who Kill
This was a show about a halfway house for delinquent puppets. The show starred DAN REDICAN~! and a bunch of puppets. Didn't last too long. It was bizarre but entertaining.

Internet Slutts
Two guys (one of whom is shaped like a penis) go and surf the net for info on whatever the plot dictates. This show gets pretty nasty, they just showed a snot filled episode, and they once showed a prince albert. Still, great show.

Elvira Kurt's Adventures in Comedy
Elvira gives a bunch of up-and-comers a chance to be on TV. As you can guess, it was hit-and-miss, but still a good show.

The Gavin Crawford Show
I really dug this show. There was a continuing plot about Gavin's career in acting, combined with some funny sketches and recurring character. A great outlet for Gavin's immense talent as he got to play many characters. Too bad Gavin went to do that Hype show instead, this show was a helluva lot better.

Open Mike with Mike Bullard
I feel sorry for Mike sometimes, because the crowd is completely quiet when there's good jokes and bits. I also like Lawrence Morgenstern. I don't get to watch this as I much as I'd like but it is a good show.

Ken Finkleman
Ken Finkleman has made 3 different shows, and I thought they were all brilliant. The Newsroom featured Finkleman as a neurotic news director and a lot of great Canadian comics. When the shows were released on video, I bought them immediately. More Tears was a sequel the Newsroom, and the brilliance continued. I liked it a bit more than Newsroom because it was a bit stranger and more neurotic. Foolish Heart was Finkleman's third show produced for the CBC, but it was not a comedy. Still, I loved this show too. It blew my mind.

Twitch City
One of my favorite shows. It was about a person who was a total shut-in and lived for TV. I just loved it.

This Hour Has 22 Minutes
Sort of like a combination of The Daily Show and The Awful Truth. Definitely the best form of political satire today.

Made In Canada
This show filled the void that Larry Sanders left. Great show about the entertainment industry. I believe it airs on PBS as The Industry. Be sure to check it out.
